A Lima City Tour is the perfect way to discover another side of Peru’s capital after experiencing its famous flavors. After spending the first part of the afternoon tasting up to 12 Peruvian snacks, exploring local markets and discovering Lima through its food, our experience takes a completely different turn.
The food may have introduced you to Peru, but there is still much more to understand. For the second half of the afternoon, our Lima City Tour takes you deeper into the Historic Center, where colonial buildings, underground catacombs, iconic plazas and centuries of history reveal a completely different side of the city.
From tasting Lima to walking through its history, here is what comes next.
From Peruvian Flavors to Lima’s History
Before the historic part of the experience begins, you have already spent the afternoon getting to know Lima through food. The first part of the tour takes you through local markets, Chinatown and busy streets in Downtown Lima while tasting a variety of Peruvian flavors.
Up to 12 snacks introduce you to different ingredients, traditions and cultural influences that have helped shape Peruvian cuisine.
But then the experience changes. Instead of looking for the next thing to taste, you start looking around.
- At old balconies.
- Churches.
- Historic buildings.
- Plazas.
And suddenly, the streets you have been exploring through food become part of a much bigger story.
Walk Through Lima’s Historic Center
One of the highlights of our Lima City Tour is exploring the Historic Center, one of the best places to understand how Peru’s capital developed over hundreds of years.
Known historically as the City of Kings, Downtown Lima brings together architecture, religion, politics and everyday life within just a few streets.
Walking is one of the best ways to experience this part of the city because there is always something to notice.
An old balcony above you. A church hidden between busy streets.
A building you might have passed without realizing how much history it holds.
Rather than simply moving from attraction to attraction, the experience is about understanding what you are seeing and how each place connects with Lima’s past.
Discover Casa de la Literatura Peruana
One of the interesting cultural spaces along the route is Casa de la Literatura Peruana.
Today, the building is dedicated to Peruvian literature, writers and cultural exhibitions, but it originally served as the historic Desamparados railway station.
That contrast makes it an interesting stop. You are standing inside a building that once welcomed train passengers and now preserves another part of Peru’s cultural identity.
It also shows how Lima continues to transform historic spaces instead of simply leaving them in the past.
Even if literature is not usually the first thing you look for while traveling, the architecture and history of the building make it worth discovering.
Go Underground at the San Francisco Catacombs
The San Francisco Catacombs are one of the most memorable stops on our Lima City Tour.
From the outside, the San Francisco Church and Convent is already one of the most recognizable colonial landmarks in Downtown Lima. But underneath it is a completely different experience.
The underground catacombs were historically used as burial spaces, and today visitors can walk through sections of the tunnels and see human remains that have been preserved beneath the convent.
And yes, you will see bones. A lot of them.
But visiting San Francisco is about much more than that. As you explore the complex, you can also learn about colonial Lima, religion, architecture and the role these spaces played in the city centuries ago.Having a guide explain what you are seeing makes a huge difference here.
Without context, they are simply underground tunnels and old rooms. With the stories behind them, they become part of Lima’s history.

Explore Lima’s Main Square
Back above ground, the walk continues toward one of the most important places in the capital: Plaza Mayor, also known as Lima’s Main Square.
This is where the Historic Center suddenly feels much grander.
The square is surrounded by some of Lima’s most recognizable landmarks, including the Government Palace and Lima Cathedral, along with colorful colonial-style façades and traditional balconies. It is also a place closely connected with many important moments in Peru’s history. Instead of simply stopping for a photo, this part of the tour gives you the opportunity to look around while your guide explains the stories behind the buildings and the square itself.
Sometimes knowing what happened in a place changes completely how you see it.
Discover the Details You Might Otherwise Miss
Exploring Lima’s Historic Center is not only about its famous landmarks.
Some of the most interesting moments happen between them. While walking, your guide can point out architectural details, historic streets, balconies and buildings that might be easy to overlook when visiting independently.
That is one of the advantages of discovering Downtown Lima on foot. You have time to observe your surroundings instead of simply seeing everything through a vehicle window.
And after spending the first part of the afternoon inside markets and among local food stands, the contrast is even more noticeable. The same city begins to tell its story in a completely different way.
See Another Side of Lima at Parque de la Muralla
Another part of the historic area connects you with Parque de la Muralla, where remains associated with Lima’s old defensive walls can still be found.
From this area, you can also see Cerro San Cristóbal, one of the most recognizable hills overlooking the capital. It is a good place to appreciate how different parts of Lima meet within the Historic Center.
Colonial history, modern city life and views of the surrounding landscape all exist within the same area. And after walking through busy streets, churches and plazas, it offers a different perspective on Downtown Lima.
Why Combine Food and History in One Afternoon?
Because they tell two sides of the same story.
Food can help you understand Peru through ingredients, migration, traditions and recipes passed from one generation to another.
The Historic Center tells those stories through architecture, churches, plazas and monuments. That is why the transition between the two parts of the experience works so well.
First, you discover Lima through its flavors. Then, you discover the stories behind the city itself. Combining a food experience with a Lima City Tour allows you to see the capital from two completely different perspectives in a single afternoon.

A Different Way to Spend an Afternoon in Lima
There are plenty of ways to explore Peru’s capital, but spending an afternoon combining local food with history gives you a more complete introduction to the city.
You begin surrounded by markets, local vendors and Peruvian flavors. A few hours later, you are walking through colonial streets, visiting underground catacombs and standing in the middle of Lima’s historic heart. It is the same city, but it feels completely different.
Our Lima Downtown and Market Food Experience brings these two sides together in approximately five hours, starting with up to 12 Peruvian snacks before continuing through some of the most important places in the Historic Center.
So come hungry. But also come curious. Because once the last snack is finished, Lima still has plenty of stories left to tell.
